Live Long and Prosper

"To boldly go where no man has gone before."

Not technically my outfit of the day... However I have been having a marathon of the two Star Trek films, and just generally having a Star Trek day with the soundtrack and drawing!

I was trying to work out which position I would be: Yellow - Command; Blue - Science and Medical or Red - Engineering and Security.
I don't really think I'm any to be perfectly honest, and so it's a quite a stretch that I'm even a Red. I researched it and it seemed to be the one that had the most variation in jobs, and I guess I could do some security stuff!? I mean, I definitely couldn't be in any position of command, and I just can't do science!

How to be a Becca

What you will need to make your Becca

With only a few days left in Courts as a first year, it's getting closer to having to say goodbye to some awesome friends.
One in particular - My flatmate for this year!
It has been great, and although we won't be living together next year, we WILL be seeing each other, lotses and lotses, and I shall make sure of it!
It's going to be so weird not being able to just walk out my door and into hers to see her, talk, mess around and just procrastinate from my work; and vice versa.

She therefore requested I drew her a picture for her to take with her next year, and this is what I came up with!
It's kind of like a 'How to' on being Becca - the ingredients, or supplies you will need to create the perfect match! haha.

The Giant Bush Cat of Liquorice Park

Outfit of the Day - 28th May 2013
bit reluctant to upload today's outfit of the day illustration... it really isn't my best work. It's late, and I am SO tired that my eyes have gone blurry, and I am in much need of some good ol' sleep!

However, Today, me and Charlotte went for a little explore around Lincoln. We were determined to get outside, and it wasn't raining even though the sky was very grey! We found this small park which was pretty overgrown, as though it isn't often used or maintained, but we found this giant bush pruned into a cat!? It was rather bizarre, and definitely deserved a photo opportunity.

Mission to Morrison's on the Bank Holiday Monday

Outfit of the Day 27th May 2013
I think we have already established here, I have a limited wardrobe, and always wear leggings. Okay cool.

Also, I'm the cool kid you see walking to Morrison's with her suitcase and backpack, because she's actually worked out how to balance some of the ridiculous weight of all the food shopping.

This was me this morning as I went for my last Morrison's food shop of first year, and bought the smallest shop so far, as I only have a few days left now. I also went and begged and grovelled for some cardboard boxes that I could use for packing, as I feel like I might  most definitely have acquired more things than I originally took to university with me?

Yes I have gone to the lengths of the details on the cardboard boxes. Not advertising, just having fun with specifics! :)

Sun-Day

Outfit of the Day 26th May 2013

I have had such a lovely day today. You might even say pretty much perfect?

Yet again, we were blessed to have another sunny day. First stop for the Sun-day was NewLife church, and after the service we headed over to West Common for a group picnic in the sun. It was so so warm, and I may have gotten a little burnt...
It was so much so just sit and relax, laugh and talk with friend; eat foot and enjoy cool lollies in the sun and grass.
Then the perfect way to finish off a lovely day was to walk up Steep Hill with some of the CU group for drinks and fun in the Widow pub, and a late night wander. Leading onto a sneaky Midnight McFlurry with Charley-Charlotte-son. It's so nice when you can find people you are comfortable with to chat to so freely.
Thanks guysss xx

American way is the Full way!

Outfit of the Day - 25rd May 2013
This morning I said goodbye to another friend for the summer, not before we'd gone into town for a Ribs 'n' Bibs breakfast! I felt like, although it was a small part of the day, the fact that I'm still so full from two pancakes is a lasting thing for today!

They were very yummy, but just so darn filling!

Outfit and doodles of the day - 23rd May '13

I am getting back into things. Hopefully I am not speaking too soon - but I seem to be on the mind mend and art is starting to happen again. Wohoo!

Today I went to Coffee Aroma to meet up with a third year friend who has just finished her degree and if here for only a little bit longer. I first met her back in freshers, and she has been a great help this year, constantly making sure that I am okay, enjoying my course and is just always genuinely interested in what is going on with me.

This is me sitting on one of the high chairs, which happens to be one of the few chairs I can sit in without my feet touching the ground!

To the right is my sketchbook page of the day. - I like a sketchbook which I can rip out and reinsert pages into when working on an actual project; however this is the sketchbook I previously handmade and hand-bound myself which is being used for random doodles and keeping that creative stuff flowin'!

Materials used: Image 1: Drawing tablet in photoshop Image 2: Sketchbook and HB pencil ['cos i'm bad and don't really like using soft leaded pencils... I like the thin defined line.]

Papercutting as a first

I have never tried papercutting before, but it looks so cool, and I have recently been seriously inspired by Brittney Lee's papercutting work which is incredible. I therefore just fancied giving it a go - obviously in a much more simplified way! Also, because I only had a Heavy Utility knife, which really isn't the easiest thing for working with small pieces.

Final Piece

Creating the wrought iron fencing
When creating the wrought iron fencing, I would have liked to cut out the intricate pattern as one piece into the black card, However because I don't currently have the tools to work so intricately and small-scale, I ended up cutting separate pieces folded and curved each time to make the segments. I then laid down PVA glue and put some pressure on each one to make them stick within the "balcony boundary lines". They are therefore more 3D than the rest of the image, as you can see in the photo above; taken from a side angle.

Materials used: Coloured cards and paper; a heavy utility cutting knife, PVA and pritt glue

Stitched Typography

Being an illustration student I definitely cannot get away with sending my family a shop bought card. If I did, they would know I hadn't put the time and effort in. Unfortunately around the time of my Dad's birthday I was heavily weighed down with university projects and epically failed at sorting that out. Therefore to make sure that I get a card to mum in time for her birthday, I have made it now!

This is a collection of process photos of how I drew the pattern onto tracing paper, which I then layered with some brown parcel paper.
I then wrote the lettering I wanted and pricked the holes around the lines for which to sew into.
I used a contrasting orange embroidery thread to back-stitch over the lettering.
This collection of papers was then glued onto a card to create a landscape birthday card.

C.U. Third Year Leavers books

It's that time of year again when people are moving on and up. In the C.U. it was arranged for people to write goodbye messages, and then I was asked to handwrite out all of the messages in books for each of the third year leavers.
I then made personalised books using a Japanese book-binding method which was a nice simple method of binding and appropriate for thinner books.

Materials used: I used an awl to punch the holes into the pages, embroidery thread for the binding, and a paperchase notebook for the pages and cover of the book.

*The pink post it notes in a few of the books are regarding words which I couldn't decipher in someone else's handwriting and have to check.

99 Red Balloons

You and I, and a little top shop
buy a baf of balloons with the money we've got
set them free at the break of dawn
'til one by one, they were gone - 99 Red Balloons by Nena

I set myself the task to listen to any one song and illustrate something inspired by it.

Mr. H. Potter,

I'm not going to lie. I am a huge Harry Potter fan, and probably a little bit too obsessed to be healthy. However, it is a series that inspires me so much, and keeps me motivated.
This was a piece I created in my free time - fragments of those well known images of the Harry Potter series.

Mediums used: Pencil sketch and then black biro

Tangled

This was based on an original Glen Keane concept art design sketch for Rapunzel from the disney film 'Tangled'
I really liked the sketch, and was still playing around with the line-less style of artwork.

Created around June 2012

This was still in my beginners experimental stage of using my drawing tablet, and also of drawing people in different ways.

You gotta love a bit of Disney

Created around May 19th 2012

I was super inspired by Matt Howorth and his style of work. I had only recently got my drawing tablet around the time I drew this piece, and therefore I wasn't very experienced with it, and this was my first attempt at this line-less style of artwork.

Make way for some older pieces of work

This was a piece I did for each of the girls in my form group for the end of sixth form.
I changed schools for sixth form, and it was quite hard to make good friends due to the fact that they'd had their friendship groups for the past five years, and I had mine back at my old school. However these girls were lovely and made me smile throughout my form times. x

A self portrait

One of the self portraits we had to do, had to involve a joke item.

As always, influence by Harry Potter.

I wanted to highlight the spectrespecs as the odd item within the piece, therefore they are highlighted in colour, whereas the rest of the portrait is in black and white.

Mediums used: Ink for the main figure, and stabilo fine-liner pens for the spectrespecs.

Button Moon

At the start of the year, we were drawing small items we were asked to collect together in a matchbox. Then, we were to focus on a particular item, and illustrate it in a way that showed just how big it was.
Influenced by the old tv show from the 80's, I drew my button as a moon in the vast universe with the small space-man standing on it.

Mediums used: Pen and ink

A Blogging Start

Hi I'm Hannah, and I am currently studying BA (Hons) Illustration at the University of Lincoln

This blog will be a collection of work in progress shots, final pieces and some doodley-doodles.

Hopefully the thought of showing people my work will motivate me to get it done and improve the standard of my work!
